Fore Abbey to Mullingar Cathedral Camino 2015

Pilgrims walked a 22km camino from Fore Abbey to Mullingar, which has a strong link with the Camino of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.

In medieval times monks from Mullingar walked the ancient Spanish trail called the “camino” – a distance of 800 km.  A statute of Augustinian monks in Mullingar shows them wearing the scallop shell which pilgrims on the Way of St James have worn since medieval times.

Sincere thanks to all who have helped to develop the Fore-Mullingar pilgrim walk in the spirit of the Camino de Santiago especially the committee and the many homes along the route who extended hospitality to the pilgrims.

We hope to continue to develop the important links between our parish and the Camino de Santiago in the coming years. More details about the Mullingar connections with Santiago are available at www.mullingarparish.ie/MullingarMonks.
